Hello this is Coast to Coast and today we will look at the first game of Kaunas Žalgiris in Top 16 stage.
Let’s be honest – this game was as beautiful as dead cat lying in the middle of the road.
Turnovers, missed shots, miscommunication, angry facial expression –
it’s the main ingredients of the first game after the holidays.
The only good thing was that the game only lasted for three quarters, so let’s look into them.
(It‘s obvious)
Both teams had fun during the holidays.
The number of unforced turnovers in the first quarter was simply unbelievable.
And if Bayern was able to cut them heading into to the half time, Žalgiris kept on going till the end.
(Unsuccessful leaders)
Leaders of both teams – Malcolm Delayney and Justin Dentmon played their first career game in Top 16 stage.
They obviously looked at this game as an opportunity to show Europe how good of a players they are.
Sadly, reality had other plans and most of their bad and rushed shot turned into misses.
(Old jokes)
Yes, we will talk about big guys once again.
Klimavičius and Jankūnas once more looked like LKL caliber frontcourt.
And if you think that they fell differently just look how long Klimavičius thinks about shooting the basketball.
Confidence level is zero.
Kšištof Lavrinovič didn‘t shine bright either, he looked kind of disinterested.
The only plus for the big guys comes because of the offensive rebounds,
but it was mainly the fault of Bayern players who did not box out them properly.
and also Robertas Javtokas.
Even though he got ball near the basket 6 times to many,
his defense was the most stabile thing on the court.
(Permission to shoot)
The main story of the game was three pointers.
Bombing raid that took place in the third quarter wasn‘t the fault of Žalgiris players.
Where they did make mistakes was the second quarter,
when they let each Bayern player to attack the basket being relatively open, that way enabling them to get rhythm.
(Lack of leaders)
At one point in the third quarter Žalgiris backcourt was made of Lipkevičius, Dimša and Vencvagars.
It shows that Saulius Štomebrgas was completely lost in the unknown.
They aren‘t bad players, each of them had at least one nice play in the game.
But to put them all together and expect that something good will happen of the offence is pretty naive.
Of course it wasn‘t the case when coach was benching players who played well,
but let’s hope we will never have to see it again.
And it‘s have to be stated that Martynas Pocius is more important for this team than most people thought.
Many expected win from Žalgiris, but it‘s not the time to give up and wave the white flag already.
Munich Bayern isn‘t 18 point better than Žalgiris and bad start in the second stage is not an excuse to simply give up.
Dentmon will perform better in the next game, frontcourt will be more confident and rims of the basket will be friendlier.
Final conclusion – Bayern deserved the easy victory
and Žalgiris has to make up ludicrous excuses and show confidence in themselves in the next game.
