>> Leisure Marketing is a four year degree course, it’s a sandwich course and it covers
management topics , marketing topics with the sector focus on Leisure.
>> Cathi Farrer: What I found that was really good about the Leisure Marketing degree was
that it incorporated modules like finance, economics, and strategy modules. So it wasn’t
just marketing, it was the whole fundamentals of business. I found that after I’d graduated,
a lot of my employers were really interested in what I’d been doing on my course, especially
because of my placement year experience. They knew that I had been in industry working for
a year and I could relate that to my job.
>> Clive Allen: The student placement is 40 weeks. It’s a brilliant way of getting industry
experience and building up your CV. Quite a few of the students get job offers afterwards
or use their placement experience to do their dissertations. Also because they are that
year older and more experienced we find that the year fours get a lot more out of their
final year than students who simply go years one, two and then three.
>> Oliver Bedford: My placement is currently in a marketing role at the five star Royal
Garden Hotel in London. I currently sit in a fairly small marketing team and undertake
a number of roles, mainly online marketing. So I do website content, I do email marketing,
blogs and social media. When looking for my placement I started off using the placement
database SIPS which was provided by our tutors and our placement support people and through
the help of the University and their academic team provided me with CV skills and interview
skills and then I found myself eventually at the Royal Garden Hotel.
>> A lot of the experience I use, a lot of the case examples I use are drawn directly
from my experience. I’m still involved with advising businesses outside of the University
anyway so that then feeds into the students.
>> I chose Bournemouth University primarily because of the course. I wanted to do Marketing
and I’m very interested in Leisure so Leisure Marketing was the ideal course for me and
definitely looking back I did make the right decision. Bournemouth is the perfect place
to study and to live and it has a fantastic atmosphere and the course has done me well.
