The differences between all-wheel drive and two wheel drive are especially clear when
driving on wet or slippery surfaces. To better understand these differences, two independent
tests were conducted featuring the standard equipped AWD Subaru Impreza and other two
wheel drive vehicles in its class. One of the most thorough independent testing organizations,
the United States Auto Club, conducted the tests and offered certified results. Water
was added to a polished concrete surface, creating a coefficient of friction to 0.3
with slick conditions you may encounter on roads in a warm or cold climate. Test number
one was designed to measure control during acceleration on wet surfaces. In this timed
test, each vehicle demonstrated its capability to stay gripped to the road when starting
from a complete stop. In less than perfect conditions, more traction gives drivers more
confidence during acceleration. First up, the Hyundai Elantra. Next, the Honda Civic
gave its best shot, followed by the ford Focus, and the Mazda 3. Now the Subaru Impreza pulled
up to the starting line. Accelerated and topped them all with the lowest elapsed time. Here
are the final results for test number 1. Test number 2 measured the time require for a vehicle
to accelerate from a standing start and negotiate around an increasing 90 degree corner. Better
traction around a slick curve will help enhance a driver’s peace of mind. This time performing
first, the Honda Civic. Next the Hyundai Elantra. Then the Ford Focus. And the Mazda 3. All
following by the Subaru Impreza featuring Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with exhibited
better wet surface acceleration and corning than all of the other vehicles tested. Here
are all the results for test number 2. In almost any condition, a Subaru with Symmetrical
All-Wheel Drive will give you more confidence, more traction, more stability, and more control.
