If the book or journal you need is not in the shared library catalogue, don't worry!
Registered faculty, students and staff of Western University and its affiliated Colleges have access to almost any books, journal
articles and more from around the world via RACER.
RACER allows you to search multiple library catalogues at once and to place interlibrary loan requests. Generally there is no
charge to you for this service. If any charges do arise, a librarian will contact you prior to your order.
If it is your first time using RACER you will need to create an account. Click "First Time Users" and follow the instructions to register.
Use the default Advanced Search to find the item you are after. For books you'll get the best results if you search for the book title
in quotes or the ISBN. You can also search by Author, Publisher and other details.
For journals, you'll get the best results if you search for the journal title in quotes or the
ISSN. However, you should not search for the article title or abbreviate the journal titles.
If your search was unsuccessful,
try searching other Profiles. The default profile searches Ontario universities only.
If you still cannot find your item in RACER, after changing the Profile, use the "Blank Request Form".
To order the book, journal article or chapter, click "Get It".
Details will automatically transfer to a request form.
Select "Loan" to borrow an item. Select "Copy" and include "Part Details" if you are after a copy of a journal article
or book chapter and not a loan of the complete item.
The date you enter in the "Item not needed after" blank lets the library know how much time to spend searching for the item.
Including special instructions will slow down your request, so leave this empty unless it's necessary to include additional details.
Be sure to select the pickup location. In most cases articles arrive electronically, however sometimes print copies are sent.
You will receive an e-mail notification when your item is available for download or pickup.
Check the status of your request by clicking "My Requests".
RACER is also linked from the "Get it!" buttons in many of our bibliographic databases. If you determine that the item is
not available from the library, click the "Get it!" button. In the "Get it!" window, click the Interlibrary Loan "Go" button to
automatically fill in the request form, login and submit your request.
If you have further questions, check out the Interlibrary Loan FAQ page or contact the library.
