Finding books and journals in the catalogue couldn’t be easier!
For a quick search you can go to the university homepage and click on the Library link at the bottom of the screen
but it’s always best to log on to the portal first, so you can access the full text of ebooks and ejournals.
so just log on with your network username and password
Once you are in the portal, there are many different ways to access the catalogue, you can click on the link under academic links
in the resources tab you can type in the quick search box
for this presentation I will click on the Library link on the left menu.
The catalogue search screen opens and at the default title search.
Type in the title, if you have a reference list.
I’m looking for the book Literary studies in action so I can type in part of the title: ‘literary st’ and information about the book will appear.
If the book is available and you see this from the Status section
the important information you need is the location and classmark so you can find the book in the Library.
Use the library map to help you.
From this screen you can also see that you can borrow this book for 4 weeks.
to do another search, click on start over
If a book is out on loan the record will look like this
The status information tells you when the book is due back.
books can be ordered from any campus
If the book is available as an ebook the record will look like this
To access the ebook click on the link Connect to ebook and you can look through the ebook using the arrows
For journals, remember you must search for the journal title not the article title if you have a reference
and limit to search for journals from the drop down list at Entire Collection
click on the title you want
scroll down and you can see that we have two records for science
you can see we have the journal and paper copy in the Library
we can find the journal in Journals R
The Library holds Science from v.247 (1990) in paper copy
use the library plan to help you find it
going back to the list..
the library also has electronic access to science
if we click on the title, we have different holdings for it electronically
we have it from 1997
To access the full text we click on the link.
If I wanted an issue from 2007 I would click on the top link
This takes us to the journal home page and now I’ll click on previous issues / see all previous issues to get to 2007
Click on the link for the year I want
then I can choose the month and click on the table of contents and scroll down to look at the articles clicking on the PDF for the full text.
You can place holds, check what books you have out and renew books online using My Library Record
but ask at the Information Centre for more details.
