Hello and welcome to another episode of Unboxing Horror!
Each month we’ll be unboxing a different horror film on Blu-ray.
We’ll take a look at the packaging, discs, inserts and even navigate the menus of each film we review.
Our goal is to overload you with so much unboxing goodness that your eyes will explode.
So if you’re still sitting on the fence about adding a new film to your collection, or upgrading to Blu-ray, we are here to help.
The victim of this episode is...
What We Do In The Shadows released nationwide on July 21, 2015 by Paramount Studios.
Directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi (I think I pronounced that right),
the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014
and had a very limited release in the United States on February 13, 2015.
What We Do In The Shadows is a mockumentary about four centuries old vampires living together in the 21st century,
and struggling to adjust to modern life.
But enough with the introduction, let’s check out the packaging…
What We Do In The Shadows comes packaged inside a standard Blu-ray case.
Here is the cover...
Here is the spine...
And flipping on over to the back we have our synopsis of the film,
a rundown of the special features and several stills from the movie.
Opening up the case and we a copy of our Blu-ray disc inside,
as you'll notice the disc is void of any artwork.
So with the packaging out of the way, let’s take a gander at the menu and special features…
When we insert the disc we are greeted with a silent, static menu that contains the same art design from the cover.
At the bottom of the screen we have our menu navigation with its standard fare such as “Play,”
“Settings,” “Scenes,” and most importantly “Extras”
which include a “Commentary track by Directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi,”
“Behind the Shadows,” 18 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage,
“Deleted Scenes,” which includes 12 scenes in all with a total runtime of 32 minutes,
Video Extras,” which includes the original short film that inspired the movie
as well as nine additional scenes not featured in the final film. 52 minutes long.
Next up are six “Interviews,” with characters from the film 19 minutes,
“Promo Videos,” six promotional videos for the film clocking in at 7 minutes
and lastly “Poster Gallery” which contains 51 variations of the poster artwork from the film.
With the menu and features behind us, let’s see if this film is worth sinking out teeth into...
So there you have it, What We Do In The Shadows on Blu-ray.
This film comes... RecommenDEAD.
It’s a hilarious horror/comedy that pokes fun at vampire lore,
while also tipping its hat to films that came before it such as Dracula,
Interview with the Vampire and yes, even Twilight.
Aside from looking and sounding great on Blu-ray, especially for an independent release, we also receive a total of seven special features
with more than three hours of content.
If you can’t find the humor in vampires arguing over whose turn it is to wash the dishes, then you are probably a vampire because you have no soul. So check it out.
