>> Voiceover: The 2011 Census reveals that 22.8% of the 500,000 people living in Buckinghamshire
were over the age of 60. Supporting older people to take greater control of their own
wellbeing and be more independent makes common sense and could also ease the potential burden
on the on the Health and Social Care Services. Movers and Shakers is an award winning program
that provides this opportunity. Lets hear from the groups creator to hear what its
all about.
>> Olga: I started Movers and Shakers as a way of encouraging older people to come to
together and exercise learn something new by way of craft or any other form of activity
that is, stimulating mentally and have a healthy lunch. The exercise sessions that we run vary
throughout the groups, some groups will have on a rolling programme a different exercise
per week, for example one week one group could have Zumba, they could have jazz exercise,
the could have just music to dance, they could have a more structured ball game sort of exercise.
Some groups prefer a more gentle sort of exercise and that could be by a way of Tia Chi so it
is worth trying the particular groups to see which ones best suits your needs. The craft
sessions that we run on our Movers and Shakers programme are very varied for people, volunteers
or even members from the group who can deliver sessions. We also have talks that are delivered
by professionals as well as volunteers and it could be anything around health, wellbeing
that benefits each group. People come together and just join in at your ability at your level
and enjoy the exercise and enjoy the lunch it's a very communal setting everyone comes
and shares, that's a really good element.
>> Gentleman: The whole set up as far as most of us is concerned we are old folks, but having
said that it is good company because there is varying aspect of ability we have all had.
>> Husband and wife: At the beginning it was somewhere to go when you are at our age, my
husband is 77 and I am 75 there is not much places to go unless you spend a lot of money.
>> Armentha group: Especially during these winter months when it's dark and you are an
older person it is a bit depressing, so if you come and meet other people, it sort of
help your wellbeing and you feel happier. Because when we first started the group there
were a lot of people that were coming and they were sort of looking so depressed and
so vulnerable and the said that we just watch the telly and when I look by over the two
years I can see the difference the smiles on their faces.
It's just a bit of fun we enjoy the company, and most of us who come have arthritic joints
and the exercise helps us to loosen up.
>> Gentleman: Thanks god that we have got it because I think the one highlight for a
lot of us is that it gets you out during the week.
>> Cybil: Because you don't know what you are missing it's enjoyable, so if you don't
come you don't know what you are missing so please come along.
>> Husband and wife: It's a good thing to do because you make friends at least for the
morning, you talking and eating and dancing if you want to get up. Like me I can't but
some people can, I can't but I think it's a good thing.
>> Erine: Many of us worked together when we were younger and now we meet together which
is
a good union.
