Hello lancers. My name is Maria Cina and I will be walking you through scheduling 101
where you will be making choices that will affect your upcoming school year and prepare
you for career and college readiness. Let's get started.
"And here we have our LaFollette purpose board. Our purpose today:
In order to graduate from LaFollette high school you must earn a minimum of twenty-six credits.
Two credits of math (algebra and geometry) but if you have even the slightest inkling
that you will be going on to college, you must earn three credits of math.
-- Again that's three credits for college--
And lastly you must chose between option A and option Β.
Option A: Earn one credit of fine arts and one credit of career technical education .
Examples of fine arts include:
Option Β--
"Hey Kiki." "Hey Mark can I ask you a question? "Sure."
"See I don't know what I'm gonna do after high school. Can you help me?"
"Well LaFollette elective courses are a great place to explore subjects related to numerous careers
and set some time aside to research classes that you are interested in.
"Thanks Mark." "No problem.
"A successful honor's level student is well organized and has really good attendance and is intellectually
curious and is willing to do an hour or so of homework a night. Um. Effort is a big part
of being an honor student I think. There's that intellectual curiosity I think that's
important and just enjoying the subject matter, just being eager to kinda explore things.
Not just do 'em, to do 'em. If you're ready for that then.. you're welcome. Come.
"Shakespeare's like the coolest poet ever.
"Hey T." "Hey Kiki." "Where can I find the course descriptions?
"The curriculum guide can be downloaded from the LaFollette website and viewed in career cruising."
"Thank you T" "No prob"
"Aw dude. Take this class. This class super fun."
"I would but I need a language." "Talk to your counselor about it, maybe he can put it in there."
"Hey!"
(both say at once) "Oh hi Maria" "Hi guys. This is James and I'm Hector and
we will be talking about scheduling cards today. So teachers please pause the video
and pass out the cards while your students grab a pencil."
(Hector translates into Spanish) "Saquen sus lápices y vamos a comenzar."
"We will now be filling out our course request cards. Please get out a pencil and follow along as we complete steps one through five.
Let's begin with step one. Fill in your ID number, last name, first name, current grade and second block teacher.
(Jeopardy music)
"Moving on to step two. Complete course requests. Flip to the back side of your course card.
Courses that are shaded are required. You must choose one from each academic area that is shaded.
Let's start by choosing an English class. Put a check next to your English selection
and copy the course number, course name and credit onto the front of your card.
If you have other shaded areas on the back of your card, check the box next to your desired course
and copy the information on the front of your card as you did with the English section.
It is very important to copy the course number exactly as it is printed.
Continue choosing courses until you have eight credits listed in the course requests box.
(Jeopardy music)
After you have eight credits move down to step three. Complete alternate requests. This box should contain two credits of courses.
Alternate course selections are very important as they will be used if
your first choice listed in the course request box above is not available.
"Yo T what's up man" "Hey Jose!"
"So what's the thing with the alternate backs on the scheduling card?"
"Well you have to write down your alternate choices and you have to make sure you have
a total of two credits so do the math.
(Jeopardy music)
"Move on to step four and verify the information you wrote down as accurate by checking each box.
You can now log in to career cruising from any computer that has internet access
and submit your requests. Complete step five by getting appropriate signatures and turn
your card in to your second block teacher."
"I finished filling out my course request card. Now what?" "Hold onto 'em. You'll enter those courses into career cruising"
"When can I enter my requests? "You can enter them from anywhere you have internet access
or when your class goes to the computer lab in a couple of weeks."
"I think I'll do it right now!"
Kiki: "Hey I'm almost done with my career cruising scheduling.
Mark: "Oh. How do you get to career cruising?" Kiki: "You go to the LaFollette home page
and click on the career cruising icon in the left column. It's really easy. For your user
name you add your student id and then for your password you add your birthday plus your first and last initial."
Mark: "Oh thanks that was helpful."
Maria: "Here I am outside of student services where you come to get your scheduling questions answered.
It is very important that you get to know your counselors and the teachers and
to make an informed decision about what courses you will be taking the following year.
Because changing your schedule can be rather difficult.
Maria: "...Um I need a little help with my scheduling."
Kiki: "What if I still have questions? Jose: "No problem. Talk to your counselor about
general questions. If you have any other questions talk to your previous or current teacher.
If you have a case manager work with them. If English is your number two language,
talk to your BRS and you will get it done.
Maria: "There's so many choices. So talk to your counselors and teachers and educate yourself on the courses LaFollette has to offer.
I'm Maria Cina, signing out. I'll see you at school.
