Curling Super Championship comes from the same team that did California Super Sports,
a collection of DSi sports minigames with some of the worst controls in the history
of...Super Sports. So to be honest, I was kind of expecting the worst from Curling Super
Championship, but you know what?
Honestly? Its actually not bad, you guys.
You would think that, to enjoy a video game about curling, you should probably like curling.
Turns out this is incorrect. Because I dont know a damn thing about curling,
and I actually enjoyed this thing. In fact, if you think of it as a kind of puzzle game,
theres really no reason you wouldnt enjoy the core gameplay here.
The content, on the other hand...kind of, slides off the target.
So curling. Um. Well, its definitely a...thing. Theres a target on one end of the ice,
youre sliding a big rock thing from the other end, a bunch of people rapidly brush
the ice in front of the rock for...friction, I guess. I dont know. You want to have
the rock thats closest to the target, alright? Nothing else is relevant, except to point
out that...
The Russians? They have some beautiful curling women.
Ill tell you what else is beautiful. This games controls. Frankly, after California
Super Sports, thats the last thing I expected to say about this game. But...it actually
controls pretty well. You line up your character, with either the stylus or the d-pad, you slide
to adjust your power and release to let it go. Its actually, like, intuitive. And
easy.
This really is super curling.
And the brushing works really well, too. Once the rock is sliding, you can adjust its trajectory
by...well, brushing. Sliding your stylus back and forth, in this case. It works great for
a few reasons. One, it actually does allow for some intricate controls...you really can
adjust your shot with precision. And two, it just makes sense.
It feels like curling. And thats really cool.
So where the ice melt a bit? Well, the presentation, for starters. You wont find those gorgeous
Russian curling women here. Instead, you get...some really strange looking characters. Not a great
looking game, to put it kindly. And unfortunately, its also a bit short on options. Theres
local and single-system multiplayer, which is awesome, but...single-player is limited
to just tournament and match play.
And you cant adjust the match options whatsoever.
Curling Super Championship is almost a really good DSiWare game. I mean, the gameplay is
surprisingly good, the controls are solid...its actually a lot of fun when youre in the
middle of a match. Especially given how challenging the AI is. But in general, the game just doesnt
have much stuff.
And the women sound like theyre..
Actually, I take it back. This games incredible.
