August 5 1972, Aerosmith signed to CBS Records by Clive Davis after he sees them play at
Max's Kansas City Club New York.
August 6 1963, Bob Dylan recorded the first session for the album The Times They Are A-Changin'
at Studio A of the Columbia Recording Studio, New York City. Dylan's third studio album
was the first collection to feature only original compositions and was produced by Tom Wilson.
August 7 1954, Johnny Cash married Vivian Liberto at St Ann's Catholic Church in San
Antonio. The couple moved to Memphis where Cash became an appliance salesman while studying
to become a radio announcer. At night he played in a band with Luther Perkins and Marshall
Grant, and was signed to Sun Records a year later.
August 8 1970, Janis Joplin bought a headstone for the grave of one of her greatest influence
Bessie Smith at the Mount Lawn Cemetery in Philadelphia. The headstone reads: "The Greatest
Blues Singer in the World Will Never Stop Singing."
August 9 1963, Born on this day, singer extraordinaire, Whitney Houston. In 2009, the Guinness Book
of World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time. We will always love
you Whitney!
August 10 1970, Viva Las Vegas! Elvis Presley performed the first night of a four-week engagement,
playing 2 shows most nights at The International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
August 11 1962: Tony Bennett's, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" was released. Went
on to win Grammy Record of the Year.
