>> The increase in iPod use from 18 to 76% in children ages 18 --
eight to 18 years of age is an important thing to know.
These kids, according to another survey are --
this is the number one source of noise in their life.
So if they're listening to the MP3 players
with the earphones plugged in, and they're listening
at high levels, then sure, there's a potential danger
for noise-induced hearing loss.
Will all kids get noise-induced hearing loss from this?
No. I mean, the key is moderation.
The key is education.
Make sure that the kids know, or your children know,
that they should start with the volume low, and turn the volume
up only as loud as it needs to be to hear the song.
To take listening breaks after an hour or so, and not listen
for extended periods of time.
And to just, you know, use moderation.
I think that really, truly, education is the key.
It's not the device that causes the hearing loss.
It's the way that we use the device
that causes the hearing loss.
So education and moderation.
