The Nautical Archaeology program is the oldest and the largest in the world
in fact, and we have
been building capacities for forty years here. This Pepper Wreck project was
particularly interesting because it allowed us
to understand, I think for the first time how these vessels would go with
450 people and 220 tons of peppercorns and lots of
armaments and food and
for all these people during six months from India to Portugal.
What we have done with the Pepper Wreck, this ship wreck, for which we had a little bit of
timber, was we reconstructed the hull
and then we tested its sailing abilities. Now that we have
this model ready, we are planning to go on and test
our results on other vessels from other nations and try to understand
which navies were more powerful at which time and why.
That's basically our next question.
