I found out that I was on track to have a really good chance of getting into the
University of Delaware so I just stayed on that track. Because of the Commitment you know, I don't
have nearly as many loans as a lot of people might expect. Students from in state
have a chance of getting into without competing with outside students.
Without the scholarships and financial aid that I receive at UD,
I would have never
been able to go to college.
It's going to be a manageable debt that I can pay off
hopefully within a couple of years. It was probably the best decision of my life
to come here.
The commitment to delawareans means the University of Delaware puts the
residents of our state first,
first in outreach, first in admission,
and first in financial accessibility.
It's a principle we live by every day.
Outreach starts in middle school.
Each year hundreds of Delaware middle schoolers spend a day on campus for
tours and interactive activities
Research has shown that
preparation for college begins early
so our goal is to start at the middle school to give them
the roadmap that they need to do their planning
we invite every high school guidance counselor in the state to meet annually
with our admissions team
we visit every high school in the state and encourage all Delaware high school
students to visit campus as our special guests.
I think that it's an eye opener to students in high school around the state
that they actually have a chance of getting in and that they should try
to apply to University of Delaware. I just decided I was going to to the military and
then go to college
but then the Commitment to Delawareans and knowing about my
financial aid situation, I realized that college is definitely possible. On
campus I am involved in undergraduate research, I'm a Ronald McNair scholar,
a diversity enrichment leader,
a Blue Hen Ambassador,
The Yes UCan UD extension program
and the exercise science club.
The Yes UCan program
is designed for getting exercise for people with disabilities and limited mobility
My participant and I, we train three times a week. He has Parkinson's Disease. One of the
things that I work on with him is improving his quickness, which lessens the
chances of him falling. He's really inspirational me. I love see how hard he
works.
The commitment to delawareans provides all students in our state with an academic roadmap.
It outlines the courses students must complete and the grades expected.
The Commitment is close to a guarantee, if students fulfill all the requirements in
the Commitment they can be confident that they will be admitted to the University of Delaware.
And, Delawareans are the first to hear of their admission.
All Delaware residents who apply by December 1st will hear from the
Office of Admissions beginning in January.
Non-residents must wait until March.
Delawareans never compete for spots with non-Delawareans.
A year ago, for example, eighty eight percent of Delaware applicants were offered
admission while only fifty seven percent of out-of-state applicants were
You don't realize what a select school it is and how privileged in-state
students are to go there. I love the school. I love my job at UD, the classes,
the professors, the people, the atmosphere it's just fantastic.
You really have a regional school in your own backyard. It's
our university it's for our students
and we talk about that with finances as well because if you want to go out of state and
major in something big,
might have to take twice as much money in loans and tuition. When you talk to a lot of
out of state students,
they just love Delaware and a lot of in-state students don't realize it,
because it's in state and it's close to home. Our aim is to make a UD education
affordable for all qualified residents of our state.
We pledge to meet the full demonstrated financial need of all Delawareans who
file the required paperwork by the deadline.
Full demonstrated need includes tuition, fees
a stipend for books, and on-campus room and board
UD awarded 7.9 Million dollars to Delawareans through the
Commitment this school year.
It's definitely saving my parents a lot more
than going to another school that was about 50 thousand dollars. I can easily get
involved in everything I wanted to get involved. The reason I chose engineering
was Engineers Without Borders. I really saw that engineers can really help
people. I became part of the Guatemala bridge project
and they chose me to be the project manager.
I run the whole project. I communicate with the community as well as our mentors, our professors and
make sure everything is running smoothly.
I'm doing research with a professor
at University of Delaware dealing with cancer cells mainly cell growth.
I'm a biomedical engineering major and
hopefully I'm going to med school for oncology, mainly because my mom had cancer when
I was a young kid. We need both decided to go to UD because we were both two years apart
and so we were both going to be in the college. I've really wanted to go out of state
but my mom was just like you should probably consider the price because your brother
is coming to college. I need to pay
for both of your schools and you both want to go to grad school.
We know how important is to leave college with this little debt as possible
and we pledge to minimize students' debt
our goal is no Delaware student will have loans totaling more than twenty
five percent of the cost of a four-year education at UD. University of Delaware
was almost all I could financially
afford but they really understood my situation they were very willing to help
me out. It seemed like I was actually conversing with real people rather than
just a system.
So, I appreciated that sort of extended hand from the university so that's
ultimately why I chose it. Financial freedom means students can make an
impact close to home
and give back to their communities.
My mom had been taken to hospice. She did a lot
for indian river. She's the one who did spirit wear on Friday nights,
she worked in concessions. I went to school on monday telling
my closest teachers that she probably wasn't going to make it to the end of the day.
Everyone at IR, the teachers, they always were saying that they were there to help.
Even though he is at the university, he comes down every weekend in the fall
and he's like a volunteer assistant football coach, he helps prepare
for games, he helps the film people
and he's willing to do anything you ask. Delaware keeps giving him that same
opportunity he had in high school. I know he loves the University of Delaware.
He comes down every week. He's got his Delaware shirt on, his Delaware cap. He transforms them into green and
gold every Friday night,
but as soon as the game is over, he's right back on with that Delaware hat. When it does come time
toward my senior year to get a job,
I want to come back to Indian River High School to teach.
We look at him as one of our great success stories because that's one of
the kids that
you produce that you want everybody say "Hey, look what Will did. I can do the same
thing."
To students that are looking to apply to University of Delaware,
my advice to them is to continue to be aware of the Commitment to Delawareans
Be aware of the classes and be aware of how on track you are. Because of this
Commitment I see people being able to do things that they otherwise would not have been able to do.
It just shows how much the University really wants you help those within the state
succeed.
