This painting is titled Corpus II and there was a...
this was I believe in 2010, and I have been pursuing
a medium called encaustics. Ever since I saw the work of one of my teachers
at Sonoma State, a man named Mark Perlman,
and I knew early on that I wanted to work
abstractly. I knew that I was really attracted to surface and materials.
And really, for a lot of artists, I know they need to know what...
basically what the finished work is going to look like. And their challenge is to make it
interesting.
For me, it's the not knowing, sort of working from the subconscious.
It's, you know, sort of that phrase the journey not the destination,
to see what comes up. And...
so in terms of this piece, and this
series of pieces called the Corpus Series. Again, I was trying to really work like
out of my body, just right out of my gut, and see
where this would lead me. You can see how
deeply textured this is and layered.
And then what this medium does for me, is I'm actually able to collage, you know,
like you can see there's a collage element here.
I love the fact that I can draw, of which I've done here.
I do a lot of pouring. For this whole series I thought, "Get out of your head,"
which is very, very hard to do as an artist.
Sometimes I try to limit my palette, because it's so
easy to use every color, 'cuz first of all, they're beautiful paints; they're just
gorgeous.
And so this one was more like greens, I was combining sort of
these burgundy colors and yellows to get this. And just
not throw everything that I had at the piece.
But I probably threw a lot of stuff. [Laughs]
There's probably a month's worth of work here, not that I work
eight hours a day. And I try to work on many pieces at the same time, because
it's real easy to get
obsessed with just the one piece, trying to make it right. And then you kind of
destroy it, and then you bring it back.
But, my goodness, I would say
probably somewhere between 15 and 20.
You know, 'cuz it takes a while to build it up. And you can
see that it's very, very textured in here...
very textured. And also,
you know, I do a lot of scumbling with brushes and things like that. So
it's gonna take a long time, exactly how many, I...it's hard to...
to really say. But, based on the number of hours, number of days I work on it
I would say at least 15 to 20 layers are in this particular piece.
