Hi, I’m Kathy Anderson, from the University of Nebraska, and a member of our HorseQuest team.
If you have a mare and choose to breed her, be sure that you do some homework and
have a good understanding of the mare’s reproductive cycle.
So that you have a better idea of when you need to breed her and can have the process go rather quickly.
Mares are what we call “seasonal breeders” and cycle when the day length is long.
Meaning that you are going to be able to breed that mare sometime in the spring and early summer.
Remember that she has about eleven and a half month gestation length and so you
might take that into consideration when looking at what month you are going to breed the mare.
Most of the times we are going to be breeding the mare in the months of April and May.
She is going to cycle about every 21 days and usually be in heat or be ready to be bred for only about 3 or 4 days.
There is various ways that you can check when a mare is ready to be bred and
that can be done by a veterinarian, a stallion or sometimes a gelding.
