In this tutorial we will learn how to perform exponentiation.
Definition:
Exponentiation is what you do when you evaluate expressions like 4 to the 8 or 7 to the 3.
The formula is that the exponentiation of a number that we call the base to the power
that we call the exponent, (base)exponent, means that you multiply the base times itself
exponent times.
In order to do this you only need to know how to multiply
Let's do some examples:
Let's find the result for 3 to the 2.
1. The base here is the number 3. 2. The exponent is the number 2. When the
exponent is 2, you say that you are 'squaring' the base.
3. Here we have 3 to the 2 or in other words three squared, this is equal to:
3 x 3 = 9.
Therefore 3 to the power 2 or three squared is equal to 9.
Let's do another example:
Let's find the result of 8 to the power 2.
1. The base here is 8. 2. The exponent is again 2. We are again using
the exponent of 2 so we are squaring the base. 3. Eight squared is:
8 x 8 = 64.
Therefore 8 to the power 2 or 8 squared is equal 64.
Let's do another example:
Let's find the result for 5 to the 3.
1. The base is the number 5. 2. The exponent is the number 3. When the
exponent is 3, you are 'cubing' the base. 3. Here we have five cubed or in other words:
5 x 5 x 5 = 125.
Therefore 5 to the power 3 or 5 cubed is equal 125.
