Hello and welcome to a brief tutorial on getting started with Second Life.
I'll be walking through the steps to get an account,
download the Second Life software onto your machine
logging into second life
and finding Oregon Community Colleges island.
The first thing you'll want to do is open up a web browser and go to W w w dot
second life dot com
this will bring you to the main page of the Second Life site.
There you'll see this large orange "Join Now" button near the upper right-hand corner.
Click that,
and it will take you to the account sign up page
Now, this next step might be one of your most challenging
you have to pick a name.
keep in mind that because there are so many avatar accounts
the first name or names you choose might be taken
Once you enter a name and move on to the password field
this form will give you a green check if the name is available.
As far as what name you choose that is entirely up to you.
Though I picked a name close to my own to make it easy for all the people I help to
find me,
many people choose names that are descriptive, or sometimes fantastical
or reflecting something they like, or a hobby, really
the choices are so wide open it can be challenging to narrow it down.
Just be aware that once you choose a name it is yours forever.
You can't change your account name once it's made and you are only allowed one free account
per email address
so you can't make a second accounts changing name from the email address will be using
for your teaching account
OK, to walk through the rest of this I'm going to create an account and choose the name
virtualportlandia because I think it's likely not taken
I might get surprised here
okay here we go
Now that I have a name I can walk through the rest of the form. Let's see...
I pick a password
and then I choose a starting look.
don't worry too much about your starting look.
One of the very first things most people do when they get a Second Life account is
log in and and spend a little time customizing their avatar.
We have some free t-shirts from each college available for you on the island for example
and other items like hair,
so just choose something for now that you're comfortable with.
Once you've chosen a beginning look,
you are then asked to fill out some contact information, give the answer to a security question,
fill out a field to make sure you are a human requesting an account and not a robot,
and then click the create account button.
Then you'll want to log into whatever you mail account you gave in the contact information
section of the sign up form and wait for the arrival of an account confirmation email.
This can take a few minutes
so if you have to pause the movie go ahead and pause and leave it open in this window
Opened your email in a new browser window or tab
and then come back to this video once you've received the confirmation email and have
responded to it.
OK! Welcome back
now that your account is confirmed that's step one done.
Step two is to download the Second Life software to your machine and install it.
You may have already downloaded and installed the software because when you click on the
confirmation link in the email Second Life sends you, you are given the link to download the software.
if you missed this for any reason, you can always download the software from the Seccond
Life site anytime from the link at the bottom of the main screen.
Once you download it, the Second Life client installs like any other program.
it Just click on its icon to open the installer program and then follow the steps when installing it
on your machine.
Once it's installed you open the program by finding it in your applications list or
clicking on its desktop icon if you installed one
and it will open to the second life login screen.
You log in using the username and password you entered into the sign up form
Once you do this, you're presented with the terms of service agreement
OK,a moment of honesty here
I know most of the time we glaze over these terms of service agreement links in haste to use
the program we're trying to get to
but I encourage you take a little time to go through the terms of service for Second
Life
Since this is such a new type of technology for most of us
the terms of service is actually interesting
in that it may present scenarios of using the software to you that you haven't yet thought of.
Now with that said, if you're eager to get started and you just want to read it later
on, you can always get to it at the main Second Life site from a link at the very
bottom of the page.
Ok - time to take your first steps as an avatar.
When you first log into Second Life, your "avatar"
or your character on screen
is placed in an orientation area called Second Life Welcome Island.
This orientation area will teach you how to walk, zoom, chat,
sit and fly.
At step six of orientation you're presented with a wall of destination choices
You can choose one of these places or you can choose to go directly to Oregon Community
Colleges Island from this point.
Either click on one of the choices in front ofyou
right-click and selectteleport
or go to the search box in the upper right-hand corner of your screen and enter Oregon
Community Colleges and click to search
this will bring up a link to Oregon community Colleges island.
Click the title and you'll see a brief description of the location and a teleport button.
Click that teleport button and you should now be on Oregon Community Colleges
Isle, at the landing point. Welcome!
We look forward to seeing you around the island. :)
