Hello, ShadowRock here.
This is going to be a sort of.. closed captioning
commentary demo.. thing.
Fun fact: this is a some cut out Mega Man Network Transmission footage from Part 2, that didn't make it in the final video, so enjoy.
I've been checking through the comments and such recently,
and saw a few of you guys asking for commentary, and another few saying keep it out.
Now here's my stance on commentary at the moment:
I think for me it's going to depend on the type of game and if I'm really feeling up to it or not.
For example, for a game like the Ace Attorney series, a game that's basically like a interactive story book,
or any other game like so that speaks for itself, I wouldn't want to do commentary for those.
Simply because putting commentary over it would kind of ruin the game for everybody, in my opinion.
Now for games that focus less on story and more on gameplay, yeah, it's cool.
I'll be honest, when I first started up the Kingdom Hearts II playthrough, I was originally going to voice commentate on it.
However... after watching it a few times, I ultimately decided against it after the first episode.
Why? Because while what I said might've been funny or whatever,
I still felt like the commentary was taking away the feeling and epicness from the game's story.
And that's my goal for doing these videos.
I want to give y'all the full experience on the game as much as I possibly can through these videos.
In all honesty, I rather you guys fall in love with my favorite games that I'm showing than me personally.
I take some joy when I start doing videos on a game, and people start asking more about it.
Then later on, they tell me that now they're playing the game and its series thanks to me showing it off.
And I'm happy about that, because again, that's pretty much my goal here.
Anyway.. before I ramble on too long, back to the topic.
So I think I do like this text commentary thing, however it can get in the way of the video..
The same way voice commentary gets in the way of things like the audio.
So I was looking for ways I could maybe put some commentary while still giving users the choice:
whether they want it or not so they can turn it off and on at will.
I don't want to make two or three versions of every video though... that'd take up too much time.
Then I came across YouTube's captioning and subtitles feature.
This method actually seems to work pretty okay, and you guys can turn it on and off if you want it or not.
And this way, I can also go back to my older videos and add some commentary to them too with this.
And yeah, I know closed captioning is really meant for giving subtitles for what people are saying in a video for the hard of hearing.
But since nobody's talking in the vast majority of my videos, it seems to work.
I could probably do the same thing with annotations.. but that can be time consuming.
This method seems faster, and I believe this helps Google/YouTube figure out what your video is about too for search engines and such.
Well if this seems alright with y'all, or you hate it, let me know your thoughts in the comments.
In conclusion, yeah, please don't ask me about commentary anymore.
Or give me comments like this:
"I want voice commentary PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..."
I'm going to do what I want and what's comfortable and/or fun to me, okay?
I don't mind text commentary though, so if enough people are for it I'll try to do it more often for people that want my commentary/thoughts on videos.
Let me know your thoughts on this closed captioning thing in the comments, and that's all.
Thank you, and have a nice day.
