Hi Im Edie Falco for PETA. Im a mother. I cannot imagine having my children taken
from me and forced to spend the rest of their lives away from me and forced to spend their
lives away from everything that matters to them and not be able to anything to help them.
That is exactly the misery that mother elephants in the circus deal with everyday. They watch
as circus beaters beat their babies with whips and metal tipped weapons called bull hooks
they can hear their screams of pain and they can do nothing about it. Female elephants
also have very strong maternal instincts. They stay in tight niches. Male elephants
remain with their mothers until they are teenagers. Female elephants remind for their entire lives.
Elephants used for the circus begin training performances as babies. The trainers bind
all four of their legs with ropes, stretch the animals out, slam them to the ground,
gouge them with bull hooks and shock them with electric prods. These violent training
sessions are very painful. A former trainer at Ringling Brothers compound testified that
the employees would play loud music to cover the elephants screaming. Once they are on
the road these intelligent sensitive animals continue to be beaten right up to show time
so that the handlers can keep them under control when they are on stage. Please this can cannot
continue. Mother elephants in the circus cannot help their babies but we can. Never take your
children to the circus. Lets teach our kids to respect and show compassion for all
beings both human and animal. Together we can make a difference. Thank you.
