The University of Exeter Law School delivers a first class legal education,
combining high academic standards with innovative approaches to preparing and teaching students
supported by the latest technology. Here at Exeter what we do is combine
the academic rigour of studying the law, which can be a very complex and detailed subject, with
the excitement of actually going and experiencing it for yourself so
what you're doing as a student here at Exeter is learning the law, learning to analyse, critique the law
to analyse the decisions of judges through cases, but also going out into the community and experiencing
what the law means to people in their everyday lives.
This year we did a project on traveling community
and that personally gave us the opportunity to go out there,
to engage with them, to understand their lifestyles, their culture
because I think an integral part of being a lawyer is to understand people on a personal level
aside from just understanding their legal issue. This hands-on approach to teaching
helps students develop the relevant professional skills from the outset.
We have a system of problem-based learning which directly accompanies the
lectures and from the moment the students arrive, they're placed in virtual law firms
which obviously instills within them elements of legal professionalism and legal practice
from the minute they arrive at Exeter.
To accompany the lectures they're given real-life case studies
or problem questions to answer in which they go away and research in groups,
and then come back to us in a smaller group session, which obviously I lead as a
lecturer and allow them to present an argument on how they would advise a client in the real world then.
In a workshop, you could be looking at anything from the sinking of a ship or a crime
and to do this we'll look at the cases and the case law and analyse that and then
analyse the situation we're given, to see how the law applies and you can then advise your client
and it's really useful to be doing that from the beginning of the
degree because in three or four years time you'll be in the same situation
actually advising your client, and to be trained to do that and to look at the relevant
authorities and sources from the start, is really beneficial.
Students benefit from extensive electronic resources
including major case databases, legal journal articles
and an online learning environment including lectures, course notes and reading materials.
All our lectures are uploaded online
and they're all recorded so if you miss any lectures or you're too sick
or for example even sometimes a lecture maybe
goes through quickly to the, through the material and you can't keep up
you could watch it again online and type up your notes.
It's really comforting to know that.
For those holding offers, online resources are available to help in the transition from school to university.
That means you've really got a head start because you're able to
engage with some of the academic discussion, you've looked at some little vignettes of
some of the sorts of problems you're going to get when you come to university
and you get to experience exactly what it's like, so that when you come here
you can worry about meeting friends, getting involved in societies,
the sorts of things you should be worrying about rather than being really concerned about
the academic study from the word go. Exposing students to the latest ideas generated
by research keeps the curriculum dynamic and relevant to the changing needs of the legal profession.
Our staff that are actually going to be teaching you as soon as you come to university
are engaged in really innovative research and the sort of research that means that they're appearing in the media,
that they're writing textbooks and they're actually engaged with the sorts of problems that are occuring to people in everyday life.
Taught by highly respected staff who combine academic quality with innovation,
a law degree at the University of Exeter Law School
offers an excellent foundation for a successful career.
