Generators may accumulate limited amounts of hazardous waste
outside of the on-site accumulation area
if done according to certain requirements.
The waste must be placed in containers located in the immediate vicinity
of the process where the waste is generated.
For example, near the last step in an operation
where the hazardous residues drop out.
This is called "satellite accumulation".
The operator who attends a waste generating process
must be in full control of the satellite accumulation area.
He or she must keep watch on the satellite container
to make sure it is secure.
This operator is also in the best position to find ways to reduce,
minimize or eliminate that particular waste stream.
Often it's as simple as taking extra care
to follow all standard operating procedures exactly.
Following SOPs usually results in the best production
with the minimum amount of waste.
In any case, no more than 55 gallons of a hazardous waste
or 1 quart of acute hazardous waste may be accumulated
in a satellite container at any one time.
Unlike on-site accumulation containers, when the amount accumulated
in a satellite container reaches these levels,
that date must be entered on the label.
Within 3 days, the container must be moved out of the satellite station
and to an on-site accumulation location or shipped off-site
to a permitted treatment, storage or disposal facility.
