Pepsi With Brigid: Ireland and RESULTS Transcription
Cue Scene- >>Patrick: Hello Mom! Welcome.
>>Brigid: Welcome, we’re back! **Laughter**
>>Patrick: We’re back, we’re back… >>Brigid: Back from Ireland. Back from Washington.
I am anxious to hear about your conference. >>Patrick: Yeah, yeah, and I think you should
tell people what you were doing in Ireland. >>Brigid: We were in Ireland to celebrate
out seventieth birthday’s; dad and I. And invited our kids along, and I think we had
a great time on the *** Peninsula. >>Patrick: We did, we did… Ireland is beautiful
>>Brigid: It is a beautiful place. That’s my idea of heaven!
>>Brigid: Now, tell me about your conference in Washington, I need to know about this group.
>>Patrick: Yeah. So, this was the Results conference. And I got involved because when
I went to Haiti, and I saw the things that I saw in Haiti right after the earthquake.
Umm, I was in touch with Senator Durbin’s office the whole time; Mike Daley, his chief
of staff. And just sorta asking the question, what do we as a country do in situations.
I, I had never faced this, I had never really sorta thought about, what. What do we do…
What do we do? >>Brigid: “You’re just told that somebody
is taking care of it.” >>Patrick: “You just assume right..? I guess…”
>>Brigid: “Yeah, yeah.” >>Patrick: “And so, I just started inserting
myself, and uh, and Mike introduced me to Results and said Results is this organization
that, that thinks about poverty; morning, noon and night. And how to eliminate it both
domestically, but also internationally. And uh.
>>Brigid: Wow. >>Patrick: And, like he, like, that was just
a starting point, and he said just start there. And Results ended up bringing me to Bangladesh.
I learned about microfinance. I learned about, ya know, T.B. is close to being solved in
the world. Umm, but not a lot of money is being put into it, and, ya know. I just learned
some things. I saw what microfinance looks like, I saw when you give these loans out,
in a very small way, what. You could buy a cow, you could buy two, three, four cows and
then eventually have two homes. >>Brigid: Right, right.
>>Patrick: So, you can, it’s sort of… >>Brigid: It’s kindof like that Bible verse
about… give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Give a man a fishing pole and teach
him how to fish, and he eats for a lifetime… >>Patrick: Well, it’s been a little while
since I’ve been to church **Laughter**
>>Patrick: And you don’t have that verse down very well either, so… Uhh, I looked
at… **Laughter**
>>Patrick: Let’s stay away from that one. I think there’s something in that, I’m
not exactly sure but… >>Brigid: It’s uh, the lesson is there.
>>Patrick: This is, this is the Catholic mother here speaking. So, we’ll stay away from
that one for now. I’m sure there’s some goodness in what you just said. However.
>>Brigid: You, you know what I mean. >>Patrick: I know what you mean.
>>Brigid: Okay, so cows, fish… **Laughter**
>>Patrick: So, the point is that I left there with solutions. I saw, I saw that there’s
solutions to, to poverty on a small micro level and that, ya know, Results works on
a macro level. And so I went to this conference, ya know four hundred plus volunteers with,
ya know, with really, really smart people that came and talked with us.
>>Brigid: Right, right. >>Patrick: These people have been coming to
Washington every year to talk to their legislatures and it’s a very powerful thing to have watched,
to watch citizens go talk to. >>Brigid: Go get it done.
>>Patrick: Yeah, go get it done. Whether they’re democrat or republican, it doesn’t matter,
we’re gunna have the same conversations with everybody. And, uh, it’s cool because
everyone has a different perspective on it. I don’t know, it neat, ya know.
>>Brigid: And you told me about the woman you met, that woman from Africa that was particularly
memorable. >>Patrick: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, Yvvone Chaka
Chaka is umm, she’s a superstar over in South Africa. Nelson Mandella calls her the
princess of Africa. I think that’s where she got the name from. And, anyway, one of
her band members died of, uh, malaria. And it catapulted her into asking the question
of if her band member could die with all the resources, what happens to the rest of the
people in the country who don’t have access to those resources. And, so it forced her
into a whole world that she, ya know, hadn’t been exposed to. I mean, she knew it was there,
but ya know, like a lot of us, like a lot of us we don’t want to look at this stuff
because it’s too hard to look at. >>Brigid: Right. But because of Results working
with lots of different organizations to help these people, that’s how she…
>>Patrick: Right, right, Results doesn’t do any frontline work. We partner with everyone
who does and kindof know everyone who handles different pieces. Whether it be T.B., AIDS,
Malaria. And umm, and so she came in for not only Dave’s conference cuz it was at the
same time. So, our next blog, we’ll talk. I interviewed Ivvone, and uh.
>>Brigid: Oh, I’d like to see that. >>Patrick: And she’s got some cool words
for us, so. >>Brigid: Good. Good, yeah I’d like to hear
her. >>Patrick: Yeah, yeah. She’s pretty incredible
so. Umm, well it’s nice to be back on the blog circuit here.
>>Brigid: It is, it’s nice. **Laughter**
>>Brigid: We start our fall off, or the end of summer here good.
>>Patrick: So I would ya know, I would invite people who are in the Chicago area, there’s
going to be umm, an event, for Results. If you are interested in getting involved. Sunday,
August 26th from three to five PM at Zocolo. Just to come and hear about how you can get
involved. And that’s how I got involved, just showing up one day, and I’ve met some
of the most incredible people who. These are the kindof people I want to spend time with.
>>Brigid: Yeah, solve some problems instead of talking about it. Good, good.
>>Patrick: So, little plug for Results. >>Brigid: Good.
>>Patrick: Okay, well. >>Brigid: See you next time.
>>Patrick: Okay, good. >>Brigid: Bye.
>>Patrick: Bye. **Laughter**
