Jean Campbell: I think that the woman needs to be reassured that first of all there are
family members who love her and who would want to be there for her, and they would want
the opportunity to be there. Sometimes we have to be very careful who we speak to. Not
everyone is going to rise to the occasion but I think we kind of know the people that
we can count on and you don’t have to tell everyone; you can tell a few people. You can
start by telling those people closest to you and share with them as much as you are comfortable
sharing.
You don’t have to give them every detail but you do have to begin somewhere. Keeping
it all to yourself is a burden and it just gets easier as you take one or more people
into your confidence and tell them what you are comfortable telling them, and then if
they offer to help you, give them something to do.
