The My World of Work website is a very engaging website which has been developed by Skills
Development Scotland for all the young people in Scotland. It's bright, it's cheery and
the wee video clips which the minute the children can access at home but maybe not all of them
in school, will help them make choices for the future.
We use it a lot with the second years in particular. Really in second year it's more of an introduction
and some ideas to let them have a look at possible careers for the future and help them
make their decisions for personalisation and choice moving on into third year.
The Strengths tool in particular is very appropriate for self-awareness, for work related courses
and for evidence in things like local investigations and community involvement projects. It gives
students and young people a grounding for going forward with planning for targets, for
target setting and taking forward enterprise projects.
Obviously a huge emphasis in the junior phase of Curriculum for Excellence is this notion
of transition and to help young people make positive transitions throughout their school
stages. Curriculum for Excellence highlights the need
for personalisation and choice - My World of Work obviously, we've built that into our
personalisation and choice programme. It hugely benefits young people in that they can plan
for those transition stages. There's a huge amount of information on My
World of Work. It takes the learning to a different zone
if you like. It transforms the methodology that you're using with the young people and
it puts them in charge of their own learning.
