Hi my name is Andreas and I’m actually an international student from Germany. I came
here a year ago, and I’m going to be here for another year. This semester I took over
the International Studies Association. And we’re just a club that basically deals with
global topics from conflict to peace, and also from cultural issues to mentality related
issues. We have several activities that we do during the semester, for example we meet
once a week in the IDC building, and we have discussion events, for example, in which we
just choose one certain issue that interests us and talk about it. The interesting aspect
about it is that we have so many international students. We have both students here from
the United States and from around the world. From Asia, Europe, South America, Africa,
from wherever, basically. And the most interesting part about it is that through those discussions
with people from around the world you get quite an international perspective on it.
People from Asia have different views on things, for example, than people from Europe or South
America. And by discussing those topics you get the chance to exchange different approaches
and perspectives, and broaden your horizon. You get new ideas to approaches, which is
a really good thing. I think it's really a lot of fun, especially to me, because I grew
up in the heart of Europe. I had the experience of traveling at a very young age to many countries.
I just really enjoy that. I enjoy being around people from around the world, get the international
experience. And what our club does during the semester also is we invite people to come
over. We have guest lecturers, for example, we have diplomats coming over. And we have
people from NGO's who are clearly experts in their field. And we have one genocide survivor
from Ruwanda coming to present his case and tell us about his experience. And so those
events should be really interesting. And what we do afterwards is we meet and discuss with
the group about what we thought of those guest lecturers. We present our opinions. And we
also welcome guests to those meetings and potential new members to present their opinions
and talk about what they thought about the guest lecturer. So, yeah, basically we're
a club that deals with everything global and we welcome people from both the United States
and from the international arena to just be with us and talk to us and give us your opinion.
We're also a very social group. We show movies. We have snacks and drinks. So, that's just
the social aspect that we get into. And we welcome everybody who is interested in participating
in giving us your opinion on global issues, no matter where you're from. And we're looking
forward to seeing you in our meetings.
