often people talk about eliminating the stressors
actually the stressors are always going to be there, they might turn up
in a different format
some people find too much work stressful, some people find too little work
stressful
management supervision can be stressful whether there's too much of it
or not enough of it, so the question how do you overcome them
it's useful to acknowledge that there are always going to be there
there's something about being adaptable
recognizing they're there and
the answer I'm about to give may not be one you necessarily thinking but
there's a lot of research around positive emotions
and they seem to really
build our resilience and
what we need in order to not just cope with stressful situations
but to come out of them stronger is some resilience
so then the question is how do you get the positive emotions
when you working, perhaps studying as well, you also want to see
friends and family
having some positive emotions and putting that at the
top of the priority list doesn't always make it there
but you can combine it, this doesn't need to be a big thing
you probably already know what
makes you happy to some extent, what fires off positive emotions in you
for some people it might be music, you could get uplifted by music
it could be photos, you might have a favorite YouTube clip
lots of different things and then there's also some things about
just thinking about three good things that happened today
you don't need a lot of time to do that, they suggest writing it down
it seems to work, there seems to be something in the process
of writing that really seems to work but if you don't have time to write it down
no problem, just think it through on your way home from work
so your positive emotions will
build your resilience which will then buffer you
against some other stresses at work
they can fall into, if you like, three categories, there's some
stressful situations, are there things that you can do
there are also some thinking
we can get trapped in our thoughts, whether it's fear
concern about what's going to happen, and we can be so
in our head that we forget to check reality
and then there's the emotional response that I've just talked about
managing your time when really busy, I think, is the eternal challenge because
the temptation is
that we just rush on blindly, just doing
answering the things from who shouts the loudest,
what's the most urgent and time management is a
probably a topic I can talk about for
a good amount of time, often we
think about things in terms of just the urgency
but it's also taking a step back to think about what's important, what else
can be done
that's not a time for when you're busy though
the question is how do you get more time back
and I think sometimes we can get sucked into tasks that should only take us
five or ten minutes and they end up taking us
20 minutes, 30 minutes, and I think it's some of those time seepages
that cause us to loose time
now one top tip I've got is to have a timer, I quite like the mechanical
timer, but I recognize it's not going to work in everybody's office
it makes a little
ringing sound which might start to annoy your colleagues
and for me there's something about going realistically how long do I think
this will take
perhaps setting the timer for 10 minutes
and it's a very audible reminder that says
that's what I'm going to do, that of course does
assume that you've got your list and you're starting to work to it
lists don't work for everybody but I think that some think again very
visual, very rewarding
about crossing things off
I think it's a really interesting question
how do we motivate others, and in some respects it's the
multi-million dollar question, how does any organization, how do any
individuals
motivate other people because we're all motivated by slightly different things
and I guess the key is to ask and recognize that what motivates
us is likely to be different from what motivates somebody else
so, find out
what motivates them and see how the piece of work maybe that you're encouraging
them to do
fits into their longer term goal
it's interesting sometimes we want more supervision and support
from our boss and sometimes, the other side of the coin is
we feel that they're always in our face asking
us for updates and
I guess it's very hard for a manager
to walk the line between what's too much and what's enough
one thing that you can do and I think
one thing that you can do is to be proactive to
to think about giving them regular updates
whether it's daily or half daily or
but to go to them an go this is that what I've been working on boss this
is the status that these three reports, what else you want me to be working on
and if they see that you're
you've got things in control they're more likely
to step back, because they go that's okay
you've got things in hand I don't need to worry about what you're
doing I can focus on somebody who I haven't heard from
for a while so I'm my advice, be proactive
