What do I mean when I say I need you to be listening to people outside of your tribe?
Let me tell you. With the advent of wonderful inventions and phenomena like Pandora and
Spotify, we now get to listen to music that we just want to listen to that is completely
geared towards our specific tastes. With the advent of satellite radio, we get to listen
to only programming and channels that we want to listen to. And I want to caution you that
it's really dangerous to only have one perspective. I know we're all really busy women working
in business and sometimes we go to work and we talk to only people in our industry- the
beauty industry, health industry, mortgage industry, banking industry, or whatever. Then
we come home and we don't have any time to listen to people outside of our tribe. What
do I mean by tribe? I mean people with the same common interests. What I want you to
do is get a perspective on how other people have succeeded in industries outside of your
own because that makes you curious and smart and it makes you find out about ways that
other people have been successful in a way broader arena than what you are dealing with
every single day. And I know we're all super busy so what I would suggest is when you get
into the car, listen to a radio station that is objective as you can that has two minute
snippets. Or have your screen saver be the The New York Times or The New Yorker so you
get snippets of information outside of your regular world. Why is that important? I'll
tell you why. In the old days when we used to flip through the newspaper there was something
beautiful called spontaneous enlightenment. That meant spontaneously we would be enlightened
by something we weren't planning on seeing. We were informed about something unique and
beautiful that someone else was doing. That's why Inc Company, Fast Company and The New
Yorker are so great. Those magazines tell us about stories about people from all over
the world. If you're going to be a successful business person, you absolutely must learn
from people outside of your tribe. That's your Backpocket Strategy for the week. Make
it a great week. Hop on over to my Backpocket Strategy Facebook page and let me know what
you think of this video. Thanks and make it a great week.
