My first tip to becoming an inclusive employer is
really understand what it is to be an inclusive leader. That is about value and
difference. It's about being authentic, it's about being true to yourself
and not taking on a false personality
because people can see through that. If you can achieve that
then you can become a really good inclusive leader.
My second tip is not to say that you are blind to things. All too often in the past I've heard things like
I'm color-blind
or I don't see disability. Actually you do really
and because you do I think you need to celebrate that difference and look for the benefits that come
from it rather than just pretending it's not happening -
that's a cop out.
If I was looking at what I would ask an employer to
consider, it's probably to look at their employees in terms of what they can do
rather than what they can't. I think all too often we define people by the things they can't do
and actually we should look for the things they can do. My fourth tip to becoming inclusive would be
to have an open mind.
You never know when somebody's gonna bring something really unexpected
and valuable to the conversation.
You need to be ready for that.
My fifth tip would be to remember to be inclusive.
All too often we forget about the people who don't see themselves as diverse
and we leave them out of the conversation. Remember this isn't just about people
who are visibly diverse,
it's about everybody.
