>>Mark 2009 was my first year at Temple >>Eva He said I want to do a hands on project
>>Mark And we collaborated to create this project.
>> Eva And well, the rest is history. [guitar]
>>Mark I think this is an essential skill that students need to learn here at Temple.
>>Eva It was actually a fun project for him to get a hands on opportunity to do propagation
at Temple Ambler. We were contacted by the Zoo a couple of months after he started and
they said they would like us to raise 600 trees if possible for this reforestation of
Fairmount Park. This particular area had a very large invasive population of plants which
doesn't typically support our native bird populations and native animals.
>>Mark The short term goal is to monitor invasives and keep them out and then eventually these
trees will be able to hold their own and we'll have a nice natural habitat here.
>> Eva 144 are being planted today, um, a mix of different varieties junipers and tulip
poplars, local oaks, pin oaks, red oaks. >>Mark I imagine in ten years we can come
back and most of these tree will probably be that size there, probably 10, 15 feet in
height. Some of these older trees that they've saved. They're almost a symbol of what this
place will become. There's some really nice trees here and eventually the ones we're planting
will look the same way. [music]
