If you can hear sounds and recognize symbols you can learn to read music. It’s easier than ABC’s, Really.
ABC’s are hard. Why is the number “4” spelled F-O-U-R and “40” spelled forty?
Why is “8” spelled E-I-G-H-T? In music there are fewer symbols. In Music what you hear is what you see, So, Just follow me!
So far we’ve learned
A quarter note equals one beat or count. You say, “Du”
A half note equals two beats or counts. You say Du-uh.
A whole note get’s four beats or counts. You say Du-uh-uh-uh.
An eighth note gets one half of a beat. You say, Du-De Du-De Du-De Du-De
A sixteenth note gets one quarter of a beat and you say Du-ta-de-ta Du-ta-de-ta Du-ta-de-ta Du-ta-de-ta
If one count equals one second.
Then a half note gets two seconds
But musical speeds change. So we need to be able to hear what is twice and half as fast.
That’s why we use language. Du, Du-De, etc.
Don’t go to fast. You need to hear the sounds and remember the symbols for them.
There are three, three minute videos, before this one, that give you practice listening and looking.
Advanced equals a lot of simple. Each thing may be easy but combinations may present more of a challenge.
Here are the new sounds and symbols in this chapter.
We’re gong to look at combinations of eighth and sixteenth notes. You say Du-De for eighths and Du-ta-de-ta for sixteenths.
In this chapter these combinations are combined into
Du-ta -De and Du-De-ta
Du-De-ta is an eighth note followed by two sixteenths. Du-ta-De is two sixteenths followed by an eighth.
Lets try four beat patterns in a steady beat. Echo me. Wait for me to say it then you repeat it.
Du-de-ta Du Du Du
Du-de-ta Du Du-de-ta Du
Du-uh Du-ta-de Du
Du-De Du-De Du-ta-de Du
Now let’s start the engines. I’ll provide a steady beat. You’ll see the two new patterns and
Sixteenths, eighths, quarters and half notes. The patterns will be four beats long. You echo me where you see the whole note rest.
We trade four beats. First me then you. Ready?
Du-Deta Du Du Deta Du
Du Du-Deta Du Du
Du-Deta Du-Deta Du-Deta Du
Du-uh Du-Deta Du
Duta-De Duta-De Duta-De Du
Du-De Du-De Duta-De Du
Du-uh Duta-De Du
Duta-De Du Du Du
Du-Deta Duta-De Du Du
Du Du-Deta Duta-De Du
Du-Deta Duta-De Du-De Du
Du-Deta Duta-De Du-uh
Duta-De Du-Deta Du Du
Duta-De Du-Deta Du-uh
Du Duta-De Du-Deta Du
Duta-De Du-Deta Du Du
Alright! Now let’s go back and this time I’ll just give you a
snap. A little steady beat. listen to it and then you supply the language. Good luck!
two, ready go
Du-Deta Du-Deta Du-Deta Du
Duta-De Du Du Du
Du-Deta Duta-De Du Du
Du-Deta Duta-De Du-De Du
Duta-De Du-Deta Du-uh
Were you with me? If you matched me when I came in, you might be ready for the next level.
Keep it up. Go back and do this video a few times. Master these few ideas.
Saying and looking at simple and more complex patterns in a steady beat.
Sixteenth, eighth, quarter, half and whole notes. Duta-de and Du-Deta are our new combinations. Four beat patterns of all of it.
Echo when you see the whole note rest. OK. Bye!
