>> Shaun: My name is Shaun Branny. I am from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society, and we're
here at Mount Holyoke College making a motion picture of the HP Lovecraft story "The Whisperer
in Darkness." And action!
>> Fan: You could call it science fiction more than a lot of Lovecraft stories. It was
actually an early alien abduction, you could almost say. In many ways it was a modern story.
>> Student: And when the professor arrives he uncovers that his friend is in fact a brain
in a jar.
>> Shaun: Part of the story takes place at Miskatonic University. You'll see on my shirt.
Miskatonic University is one of Lovecraft's creations. Sort of like Tolkien had his
Middle Earth. Lovecraft had Miskatonic, and so when we needed to film it in our movie
we went around sort of shopping for New England colleges and we looked at several of them,
and actually it was my mother-in-law suggested- she's from western Mass.- and she suggested
we take a look at Mount Holyoke. And when we did, we were blown away 'cause it's a beautiful
place. The architecture is interesting, it's right for the period, which is the sort of
thing we're looking for, and so decided to come here. The folks from the university
- from the college - were just terrific for us. They were really nice and helped us get
everything set up, and lo and behold, here we are outside. Ah! It's an actor. Where did
you come from?
>> Student: We are extras in the movie The Whisperer in Darkness.
>> Student: We're the 1930s partygoers. We basically walk around, chatter a bit, and
we walk into the building.
>> Shaun: You see around me a great bunch of wonderful locals and people from the area
who have chosen to come and participate as background players in our scene. (Movie directions)
>> Fan: It's very humbling to see how incredibly professional these people are.
>> Student: This is Glenn. This is the hair and makeup artist who made us all look fabulous.
>> Student: It's been wonderful. The crew is really great; they're really fun. The other
extras have a really great sense of humor.
>> Student: It's really great to be involved in something like this, too.
>> Student: I am really excited because I am a huge H.P. Lovecraft fan, so I'm glad
that they're making this film here on our campus. [They have] honored us with their
>> Fan: The effort, the expense that they put into this is really impressive and it's
a lot of fun.
