So you signed up for an improve class. Good for you! Now I want to talk about how do you
get ready to take an improv class. I have a lot of improv students and some of them
come more prepared than others so I want to give you some tips and advice. First of all
you're going to be nervous, that's normal. Don't think that's a sign you that are doing
the wrong thing, nervousness is a great sign, it's a sign that you are trying new things.
A sign that you're taking risks and have growth and learning. So you're on the right track
if you're feeling a little bit nervous about the improv class. And nervous and excited
are often two sides of the same thing. Get there early, you want to get there a few minutes
early for the first class. Often there's payments, paperwork, handouts, that kind of thing. Make
sure you know how to get there and get there a little early at least on time. You want
to wear clothes that are comfortable for you to move around in. Now I don't mean a sweat
suit or overalls or no shirt, I mean just clothes that cover your body that you feel
comfortable moving around in. Because a lot of improv classes, especially introductory
ones have a lot of exercises with movement in them. You want to smell nice. Improv is
a team sport and one of the things that can help you be fun to play with and get along
with others is having good smells. So take a shower don't go straight from the gym, don't
ride your bike there in the summer heat, you know smell nice including taking breath mints.
I always provide breath mints for all my students so they can get along better. You might want
to bring a notepad so you can take notes although things might be very interactive, you still
might have downtime where you might want to remember things. You might want to bring a
bottle of water as well, cause you will again be up on your feet and active and moving.
These are just some things that are going to help you get ready for the improv class.
A lot of people ask me should I read something, should I read an improve book before I start?
I really recommend reading books after you do improv. I thinks it's much better to experience
it organically yourself the first time and then read it later to help solidify those
thoughts and ideas. If you read too much you're going to get in your head and not be in the
moments with everyone else in the room. So that's my tip. Get there on time, smell nice,
look nice, wear clothes you can move in, bring water, bring a notepad, deal with your nervousness
it's going to be ok, and enjoy your first improv class.
