What are some of the things that Brink brings that is unique to the FPS gaming scene [md]
It has a unique smell. It quite aromatic[ed]
movement
Shooters have looked beautiful for a while now. The animations are amazing. The architecture is amazing
But we are still stuck with this refrigerator on roller skates problem.
I can't go over things this high
So did you see that extreme motion I just made. I was miming coming to a table while actually at a table.
That probably looked weirder that it should
So yeah its weird
It has to do with a lot of things. Its about using your feet when you have a ledge like that
You should be able to climb over that table You shouldn't have to get t o a certain point press a button for a canned animation

You should just be able to jump over it. Thats what the SMART system is about.
Its not an autopilot it just means you don't have to look at your controller to figure which button to press.
You just jump over it, under it, to the side or slide under however you want to do it
Its been great watching people play. First they are like how to I do it and then 20 seconds later they are like ok I get it its fine.
They just use it to play the game
I think the SMART system actually makes your game play much more efficient. You don't have to think about jumping over walls.[md]
sliding or doing advanced movements it just decides for you. It got it right every single time I tried it.
your trying to get to the objective real fast and you know what you just hit that button and you go flying thru things, its awesome.
2 things firstly its easy to use hard to master.
like if you are learning a level then use the SMART system as much as possible.
If you time the jumps yourself you will do them faster. We have these things called challenge levels.
We have 4 challenge levels which you can play with up to 4 players Co-Op.
Its specifically there to hone your skills.
Try out new abilities or just practice. Its not a full game its like a laboratory to try out stuff.
One of them is called F ALL THIS. Its a Time Trial
You have to jump from there, suck under this climb over there and run to here
If you do it using the SMART System you know you will do ok.
If you time those jumps yourself with the jump button you will do it significantly faster.
We don't want to put training wheels on players that don't need them. you just don't use it if you don't want it.
I imagine the really expert players won't use it. I mean I really don't use the SMART system that much since I know most of the maps by now.
Is that true? It sounds true I don't know.
Now I am starting to think maybe I do use it and I just don't realize it.
If I know I have to jump here I go pip pip pip I am actually quicker than the other guy.
He's actually doing it pretty fast and he can still fire while hes doing it and he doesn't have to take his hand off the fire button to press another
We didn't want to make it so it would hobble players that are good with movements and have mastered those movements.
Ledge Jumping, Bunny Hopping all those things We wanted to build it into the game and make it legitimate.
There's no exploits here its how you want to do it. its in the game design.
Also I think you should use it before you do it manually because there are many spots you discover yourself as your playing the levels.
You figure out as you play you can jump over barriers and additional spots you can climb over there is a lot of stuff you may miss as well.
You know what I think is fascinating is that it has this shallow learning curve but so much depth there after.
There is a lot of room for expansion of your skills. But in order to do well you don;t have to know a lot.
That is the goal. That is very encouraging [ed]
People playing today, such a range of players. People who have never played a shooter, or Really experienced PC gamers trying to use the controller but they were really getting into the game.
Its really a lot of game to throw at them for only 20 minutes. Its a pretty high pressure environment. They are playing the game.
They are really playing and enjoying themselves its great to see.
Alright so we are near the end here I am going to see if we get answers for a couple technical questions. They are not that technical
We should be ok [md] We need a coder [bad] A coder someone get me a coder in here [ed]
One thing we are dying to know. Historically Splash damage[md]
Historically? All 8 years? back in the 16th century when we began the studio [ed] but seriously [md]
Splash damage has supported a wide range of platforms, they have supported alternate operating systems. Is SD going to continue to do that with Brink and the future?
Is this a Linux or MAC question? [bad] Yes its about Linux and MAC [md]
The problem with Linux in particular is that we use STEAM. We use Steam for authentication.
That is one of the road bloacks we face. Also in terms of the different platforms we release on that is really up to Bethesda as well.
We have always tried to do Linux and MAC and all that stuff but that is really up to Bethesda. [bad]
It will probably depend on demand for the game. Of course they are a big fan of numbers.
They react to demand well. If there is demand is there there will be a supply.
Yea I know there is a huge thread about it in the forums already about this issue . I figured I would try to address it with you guys as well.[md] As well you should [bad]
So what achievements and stats will be trackable by the game? [md]
Oh a bunch[bad] In enemy territory we captured a bunch of statistics. We don't know where we will expose those statistics..possibly on the internet.
We haven't really talked about it much. Don't worry that will come later. Coming soon [bad]
An Enemy Territory like stat system would be pretty impressive.
It will be done [bad] We have no announcements at this time[ed] very good [bad]
Last Question [md] Already[bad] We haven't done our song yet [ed]
You can do that in the end if you like [md]
What type of variables will server admins be able to modify on their dedicated servers?
Actually when I was setting up the config for the events there is quite a lot there they can change besides just the gametype
There is a number of preset configs for the console. I would imagine they would have even more exposed for the PC that is the plan I know.
We are not final on that. We are actually in the middle of that. We know what we would like to do.
The question is getting the decision in the proper hands doing it right and doing it properly. We know what people want and we know what we want to do.
So we should expect the level of customization we we had in Enemy Territory 2?
It may not be..Steve what do you think?[ed] It depends, the games are fairly different. There are different things to control and we have not finalized.
We are kinda being cat and mouse here because we can't give you a definite answer. Our desire is to give you everything. All the tools you need.
We have some experience doing in the past and we would love to do that with Brink as well.
I can't actually say that because the decisions haven't been made yet.
Well thanks guys I appreciate you taking the time to talk with us today and give us the opportunity to talk about Brink. Our Community is very excited.[md] thank you for stopping by [bad and ed]
