>>Theresa Bierer: Several times during the academic year Northern Arizona University
invites people from the community and other outlying communities to the NAU table. At
the recent community breakfast, students and faculty had their work highlighted. Ana Irigoyen
is sharing her presentation on Madagascar with community members; she is part of a group
of students in an international hospitality destination marketing class. The group designed
a 20 year marketing plan for that country, highlighting the many plant and animal endemic
to the island and promoting Madagascar as an ecofriendly destination.
>>Ana Irigoyen: Well it's helping us because it teaches us how to market and to create
a plan. Even though it is for a whole country sometimes you do have to do marketing plans
for let's say a hotel or something bigger than that, so this is just a bigger picture
of what we might be doing in the real world. It's very related to sales and marketing and
things like that. >>Bierer: Many NAU students are tackling global
issues in their studies and a number of them brought they're work here to the High Country
Conference Center for this community breakfast, a quarterly event.
>>Molly Munger: Today's breakfast we are celebrating first of all honors week and as a apart of
that the undergraduate symposium. So we will have approximately seven students from different
colleges on campus, presenting their research and activities that they have been developing
throughout the year and they are going to provide very quick presentations and then
have poster presentations as well. >>Bierer: Honors week is held annually with
student presenters from departments across campus.
>>Wolf Gumerman: I think a lot of NAU's uniqueness that comes out of this week is how we really
highlight our students so NAU being a student centered university, we still do a lot of
research but we as faculty really incorporate a lot of that research with our students or
promote that students research. >>Bierer: All the seats at the community breakfast
were filled as locals came to celebrate the many accomplishments of NAU undergraduates
and to support the university itself. Kevin Burke: NAU represents not only one of
the largest employers in this community but also an integral part of our culture and our
lifestyle in Flagstaff. We certainly have more amenities than any town of sixty thousand,
primarily because the university. Whether it's athletic, whether its arts and science
or whether it's just educational opportunities, it's an incredible asset. So keeping up to
date with what each other is doing is an important part.
>>Bierer: Northern Arizona University President John Haeger addressed the crowd with an update
on campus issues, but he said he's happy the primary focus of this event was student accomplishments.
>>John Haeger: Well I think is important for the community in particular we have spent
so much time over the last several months talking about budget budget budget but this
is what the university is all about. It's about students learning it's about the work
of our faculty members with students in terms of both teaching and research so it really
showcases what the university is all about. >>Bierer: President Haeger did discuss budget
concerns with these members of the community, talking about the continuing economic challenges
facing education in Arizona and promising to continue to support the university's core
mission in this tough economy.
