This Laphroaig Quarter Cask, and Quarter Cask is a very different Laphroaig to normal Laphroaig.
So it's double matured and the quarter cask process goes back to the late 19th Century.
Basically quarter casks are small cask 125 litres so a quarter of a sherry cask. The
reason they're that size? Two men could lift one onto each side of a pack horse and transport
the spirit to market. So what we do first, we get 5 to 11 year old bourbons with mix
them together and then we double mature them in these quarter casks, hence the two casks
on the front of the bottle. What this does it gives it two lots of fresh American Oaks
so balances the flavour of the distillery with the flavours from the American Oak. So
what we should expect to see in the Quarter Cask is a nice kind of light gold colour.
On the nose, a real toffee caramel nose and that's the two maturations in American Oak
a lot of the kind of vanillas and tannin's coming through here. Some dryness as well
at the back of the throat because with these oils from the cask that brings in a dryness
to the spirit as well.
Let's taste. A lot of cask oils coming through here, a lot of spiciness as well, so really
full bodied with the double maturation. Very quick, almost kind of coconut cream - really
creamy and then a very quick finish with the American Oak. So it leaves a nice dry finish
in the mouth as well. Nice long dry finish and that's Quarter Cask.
