[circus sounding music]
Hey everyone, I'm Jenn Sterger
and I'm here on the beautiful Santa Monica pier
on a sunny afternoon and I'm here
to check out trapeze school.
Well, I don't think I have the skills
nor do I want to face the heights of this
But I'm gonna take the class and watch
how everything's done.
Let's go!
[move your feet! hands up!]
[circus music]
Jenn: Class is in session. Circus Style.
This is where students are taught tricks…
and acrobatic flips in the high flying world of Trapeze.
[“toes over the edge, feet nice and wide.”]
Jenn: Before you go up in the air
the teacher mimics what you’ll actually
do when you’re high on the platform
Also covered in the groundwork – is when to jump.
Instructor: If you nail the knee hand
we’ll catch you at the end of class.
RYAN: Everything has to be done at
the spur of the moment, its all timing based,
[circus music]
Jenn: It sure is a long way up!
But some, made it look easy!
As you're swinging, the instructors are
pulling the ropes - to help you keep up momentum.
Even my Producer, Joni, and Cameraman, Rob, got into the swing of things.
But I’m much better suited here on the ground.
A more fearless student can master the knee hang
in no time.
And some...even a summersault!
Jenn: What's your favorite trick
you've learned up there?
Girl: I like doing a backflip when Im landing…
Jenn: Showoff..(laughs)
Jenn: What was it like up there?
Girl: Exhilarating and terrifying the first time
then each time it became more exciting and more free
Jenn: What's the scariest part of doing
trapeze for you?
Guy: The takeoff. Standing on the board just
before your about to take off , that unknown
Jenn: From the unknown – to the unfamiliar
the second part of the lesson was all about
learning how to GRIP, for the curtain-raising catch.
Instructor: if you nail it, we’ll catch you.
Jenn: So as an Instructor is swinging on
another Trapeze…
it’s time for your first flying moment.
[music and whoos!]
Ryan: “it’s a different beast from any other
sport when you learn it because the elements
are a lot more mental, than physical, when you first start.
As you're dealing momentum
and gravity that is usually the biggest factor of
being able to do something at the proper moment.
Jenn: Do you have any suggestions for someone wanting to get started?
Girl: Don’t think – just listen and react.
Jenn: Don' think..maybe I would have been better at this than I thought
Jenn: “If you had one rule that
you had to tell people to get into trapeze
what would you tell them?
Ryan: Wear tights! Wear tights.
Cause whether you're good or bad, fancy spandex
makes it all better.
Jenn: Yes, there’s my excuse –
I’m not chicken – I just didn’t have the right outfit!
For the Daily, Im Jenn Sterger.
