To move a shrub of small or medium size in the garden it is important to maintain a good part of the root system
so that the plant can begin to develop immediately after having been moved
Before moving prune the shrub, shortening all the branches by at least one third or half. This will limit the evaporation of water through the foliage
Then use a spade to dig a ring trench in the ground around the shrub. The trench should have a diameter at least equal to the diameter of the bush before it was pruned
It should be as deep as about half its diameter
Then start digging inwards from the trench, in order to reveal the root ball beneath the shrub
Once you have dug a ring around the root ball, continue by trying to remove it from the surrounding earth and begin digging horizontally
moving towards the earth that is located below the stem of the plant
Once you have exposed all the root ball below the plant, prepare a sufficiently deep hole in the location you want to move it to
Position the shrub in the new area and cover the root ball with the same fresh, rich soil you will next use to fill the hole
Then use your feet to press down the fresh soil around the shrub
Remember that the larger the root ball that you can move together with the shrub, the higher the probability that the plant will survive the move
After placing the plant, water thoroughly
