It was very interesting to me that the governor spent most of the time giving his agenda for
the radical reforms in education. These are pretty controversial, and, frankly, I think
the controversy over these is partially an attempt to control the conversation about
what this legislature is going to be doing for the next four months. We have a lot of
things on our agenda, and I was surprised that the governor didn’t talk about certain
things having to do with the budget: The fact that we have been borrowing. We’ve been
borrowing two-billion dollars in the unemployment trust fund. We are in debt. We also have a
number of items that we need to discuss this time, and one of the things that he didn’t
mention, but maybe once or twice, was jobs. This is what the Indiana public have come
back time and time again to tell us is the most important thing on their agenda.
