Telling the stories of the University of Houston, this is a UH moment.
[people talking; commotion]
This noisy room has become an anticipated event at the College of Education. More than
two dozen of counseling providers are attending the UH counseling practicum to connect with
doctoral- or masters-level students at a time when there's a critical shortage of qualified
mental health providers.
"It really provides good training to our students at top places, and we're also providing a
service for the places to have our students go in and do work there."
Associate professor Jonathon Schwartz is training director and program lead for the counseling
psychology program and the master's program.
"This is really an integral experience. It's a first-applied experience in the doctoral
and master's program, so a lot of them from this experience find the career they want
to go into."
Many providers present are from the prestigious Texas Medical Center, like Dr. David Curtis,
a psychologist with the Texas Children's Hospital and a UH graduate.
"The people here, in a high-quality program like this, are an opportunity for us to set
them up for success and to go out and do great things when they finish here, not just while
they're working here."
