Civil Society has changed much throughout Iranian History
this can be seen under the rule of A Khomeini, who made his rule between the years of
1979 - 1989. During the revolution of 1979 the US had strong relations to the Shah in Iran
while the U.S president Carter in the US embraced an open civil society
and freedom of speech, and the Iranian Shah did not. This led the US to pressure Iran into having a more open civil society in order
to increase their own legitimacy
and not destroy their people's visage of the name of their country
essentially the Shah agreed and did have a more open civil society in Iran
but this backfired similar to Glasnost in Russia
this allowed demonstrators and protesters to multiply
in the Savach uprising which helped Khomeini to gain a public foothold essentially leading to the fleeing of the Shah and Khomeini's grasp of power
Khomeini embraces fundamentalism which emphasized social conservatism and a literal interpretation of the sacred text called Sharia Law
