In this video we will demonstrate how to close applications in both the Metro and Desktop views of Windows 8.
On the Desktop side, things work the same as in the past.
For example, if we want to close Internet Explorer we can click on the red X,
click the upper left-hand corner and select Close,
or we can use the hot keys Alt and F4.
We can also just double-click the corner.
With Microsoft Office applications, things are a little bit different.
As with any application we can close with the red X, click on the circle and come down and click Exit Word,
or we can just double-click on the circle.
To close Excel, click on the circle and then click on Exit Excel.
On the Metro side things are quite a bit different.
First let's see if we have any applications that are open.
Move the cursor to the upper left-hand corner
or the lower left hand-corner and we see the last application that was active.
Moving the cursor upward shows that several applications have been opened.
According to Microsoft, an application goes dormant when another Metro application is opened.
But let's say we would like to clean things up a bit and not have a program still open in the background.
The easiest way to close the Weather application for example,
is by clicking the right mouse button
and clicking close.
Notice the Weather app is no longer running.
Now we'll open the Store application.
The easiest way to close an app when we are finished
is to move the cursor to the top until it changes to a hand,
hold down the left mouse button,
and drag to the bottom of the screen and let go.
If we move the cursor to the corner, we see that the store and is no longer running.
Now you know some of the ways that you can close applications in Windows 8.
