I'm John Yarmuth, United States representative from the Third District
of Kentucky.
Well, one of the things that I think is critical for the future of public
education in America is
to make sure that we eliminate any disparities in opportunity.
Every young person deserves a high quality education, and we don't have
one person to waste in this country; so we need to make sure that resources are allocated
equally and fairly and that
counseling is done adequately and that everyone has the same shot at
a quality education, and thereby a successful life.
We need to make sure that a national emphasis on education is bipartisan.
If we allow the subject of education to be
discussed in a partisan environment, then will never find the type of ideal
solutions we have to the problems that plague education in this
country. And this shouldn't be a partisan
idea, if you believe in the American Dream, if you believe in the
precepts of the Constitution, that, uh... and the Declaration of Independence, that all men
are created equal that our national initiatives in education should
be universally adopted and supported.
Well, I think that President Obama ought to come to deliver the commencement
address at Manual because Manual is a very special place;
and it's a place in which a very diverse group of students
get not just a very broad exposure to the world, but also
the ability through the magnet programs to improve and to refine
their particular talents, whether it's
in communications, with state-of-the-art communications programs; or else
performing arts, or one of the many programs here in science and math.
Manual is one of those places that allows people to explore the world,
and it sets them apart from many other institutions that basically kinda just
describe the world as those students know it and not really push
students to expand their horizons. So Manual is a very special place.
Its record academically stacks up
so well nationally. It's one of the premier high schools in the United States,
and it would be a perfect place for President Obama to showcase
his motivational efforts, and also to talk about his aspirations for a better
education system for all Americans.
