50/50 BIOFUEL BLEND.
OFFICERS AND CREW ABOARD THE NAVY DESTROYER USS CHUNG HOON HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE TAKING
ON FUEL AT SEA . THE REPLENISHMENT AT SEA MISSION, OR RAS, REQUIRES THE SHIP TO GET
CLOSE TO AN OILER, AND FOR THE TWO SHIPS TO SECURE THEMSELVES TO EACH OTHER WITH LINES
, MOVE THE FUEL HOSES IN PLACE AND BEGIN THE REFUELING PROCESS. BUT TODAY'S RAS IS A BIT
DIFFERENT FOR THE CHUNG HOON. IT'S TAKING ON 200,000 POUNDS OF BIOFUEL. COMMANDER DAVID
FAUGHT, CHUNG HOON'S EXECUTIVE OFFICER EXPLAINS WHAT THAT MEANS.
"THE BIOFUEL IS A 50/50 BLEND. IT'S 50% DIESEL FUEL MARINE F76 ,WHICH WAS WHAT WE NORMALLY
BURN AND ALSO 50% ALGAE AND ALSO REPROCESSED USED COOKING OIL.WE JUST BURN IT LIKE WE DO
REGULAR FUEL. IT GOES THROUGH ALL OF OUR SYSTEMS. WE NEED NO MORE MODIFICATIONS FOR."
THE BIOFUEL IS PART OF THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY'S GOAL TO MAKE THE FLEET MORE GREEN WHICH
HAS OTHER FUTURE BENEFITS.
"IN THE LONG RUN, WHAT WE ARE SEEING OR HOPING TO SEE OUT OF THE BIOFUEL IS A LITTLE BIT
MORE ENERGY SECURITY FOR THE NAVY WHERE WE ARE NOT COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON FOSSIL FUELS"
THE CHUNG HOON ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER SHIPS BURNED ITS FIRST GALLONS OF BIOFUEL AS PART
OF THE RIM OF THE PACIFIC, OR RIMPAC EXERCISE. RIMPAC GIVES THE NAVY THE CHANCE TO TEST AND
EVALUATE THE FUEL WHILE CONDUCTING NORMAL OPERATIONS AT SEA.
