HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor better known as Statins is a class of medications that are
commonly used to treat high cholesterol.
Statins work by preventing the protein interactions that make cholesterol in the liver.
Statins are generally well tolerated but can sometimes cause muscle cramps and upset stomach.
These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Some examples of Statins include atorvastatin (the generic name for Liptior) and simvastatin
(the generic name for Zocor).
Let your doctor or pharmacist know right away if experience muscle weakness or a change
in the color of your urine as these may be signs of a serious side effect called rhabdomyolysis.
Also talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you may be taking before
taking a Statin as some Statins can interact with other medications in ways that decrease
or increase their effectiveness.
It is always a good idea to ask questions about your medication if you are unsure or
if you experience something out of the ordinary.
