Hi everybody! I'm Tomislav Roskaric parish priest at Mala Nedelja.
This is the second of seven videos that I'll be making on the sacraments.
Today's topic is Holy Eucharist.
The Eucharist is the most important of all sacraments.
The word comes from the Greek and means "gratitude".
Eucharist has many other names: Communion, Lord's Supper, Mass.
Memory of the Lord's suffering, death and resurrection.
Sacred Mysteries...
Eucharist is based on the words of Jesus, which he told to his disciples
apostles at the Last Supper.
The words are written in the Gospels.
But I'll say more on this later.
Mister! Mister! - Yes? - Can you please bring some bread? This is empty. - Of course!
Catechism defines the Eucharist as a sacrifice
of Christ's body and blood.
Lord Jesus gave us the Eucharist
so that his sacrifice on the cross would be present all the time.
Thus He entrusted to his Church the memory of his death and his resurrection.
Eucharist is a sign of unity, a bond of love, paschal banquet
in which Christ is received, the soul is filled with grace,
and gives a guarantee of eternal life. -SHOUTS: Is this OK?
Did you forget that such bread is not used at holy mass?
I need circle. Remember? - Oh, yes, of course.
So how did Jesus actually set the Eucharist?
As I already mentioned the Gospel says that Jesus
after he gathered his Apostles in the room of Last Supper
he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT:
FOR THIS IS MY BODY
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
Then he took the chalice
saying:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT:
FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.
The Eucharist is the true mystery in the fullest sense of the word.
The Church teaches us
that Transubstantiation happens at the time of consecration (the essence changes).
Which means that the spiritual substance of bread and wine are changed,
but this does not affect their external appearance.
Change occurs at the moment
when the priest pronounces the words of consecration which we just heard.
The effect of consecration is permanent which means that wafers are stored
in the tabernacles in which our Lord is therefore permanently present.
This one is the right one, isn't it?
Circle... - OMG :)
of course the Eucharistic part of the Holy Mass is not the only part.
In the beginning we listen to the Word of God and the sermon
which is an interpretation of the Word of God.
Let's add a word of what is required to receive Holy Communion.
As Catechism teaches us, we must be fully connected to the Catholic Church.
and in a state of grace, that is, we may not be aware of any mortal sin.
If we are aware that we've committed a grave sin we must receive
the sacrament reconciliation
before going to Communion.
Important are also the spirit of concentration and prayer, one-hour fasting
which is prescribed by the Church.
And a proper behavior...
and attire as a symbol of respect to God.
Yes!, Hallelujah! Of course!
Communion wafers! Just leave them there. Thank you!
So this is just a very brief outline of what the Holy Eucharist is.
This richness is difficult to describe in words, because it's a living relationship with God.
St. Ignatius of Antioch says that we "break the one bread
that provides the medicine of immortality, the antidote for death
and the food that makes us live forever in Jesus Christ.
Until next time, God be with you! And goodbye! ;)
