Today we are going to begin to write
an argument essay. What is the
difference between an opinion and argument essay?
That is what we are going to look at.
Here is an opinion essay about Americans
being healthy written by a student.
Let's call the student Joe. Joe thinks Americans
are not healthy. look at the introduction.
Here is Joe's hook.
Health is a very important thing in our life.
Here is Joe's thesis.
Americans are not healthy because of
low physical activity, not healthy food and being overweight.
Joe has supported his opinion
with 3 reasons. If you look at the body.
Joe supports one reason
in each paragraph
This essay has some grammar problems, but
it is a good example of an opinion essay.
Let's make this an argument essay.
An argument essay mentions the other side of the issue.
So to make this an argument essay, we need to
add a refutation -- at least one sentence stating
the other side.
Some people think that Americans are healthy
because they come from a rich country and can buy lots of healthy food.
and can work out at the gym. but I don't think
they are heathly. Where shall we put this?
We can put the refutation in the introduction,
conclusion
or in the body.
We are going to put it
at the end of the third paragraph of the body.
This is the first step in making an opinion essay and argument essay.
