A Florida police officer was fatally shot when he encountered two people he described
as suspicious walking on the street early Saturday morning.
Police say Robert German called for backup, and by the time two other officers arrived
at the scene, German was alive but lying on the road. (Via News 13)
NBC reports the responding officers also heard shots fired in the distance while they were
with German.
Police later found the bodies of the two unidentified suspects about a block away from the scene.
It's believed they committed suicide. Authorities say the suspects are a male and female in
their late teens or early 20s. (Via WFTV)
Officers took German to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was 31 years old.
WOFL reports German was the first officer in the suburban town of Windermere to be killed
on duty. He was with the force for five years and had recently returned to the job after
recovering from shoulder surgery.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, investigators say they believe the confrontation and shooting
incident might have been captured on a body camera German was wearing. They're now reportedly
analyzing the device.
The identities of the suspects have not been released. Authorities say the investigation
is ongoing.
