Titanfall's titular Titans were heavily influenced by similar robots and themes of the 1980's,
including Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Abrams Battle Tank for the Sega Mega Drive. Star
Wars also influences the design of the Pilot armor options, while Abrams influences the
flow of combat.
The Titans originally started as design sketches back when Respawn was trying to figure out
what kind of game they wanted to make. Unsatisfied with the finished product, one of the designers
took the sketches and built a robot out of wire and plastic, which resulted in the Titans
we see today.
Many of Titanfall's underlying design choices are inspired by mecha anime like Gundam and
Appleseed. The goal was to combine the over-the-top aspects of anime robot fights with the gritty
realism of western technology, along with a dash of District 9 thrown in for good measure.
