-Hi, gamers! Welcome to another Jogando Offline... -Gioccando Offline!
-It's difficult to say like that in english.
-Hi, gamers, welcome to Jogando Offline. This is an interview with Eric Lang. Eric Lang,
if you don't know, is a game designer of some famous games. Say it, Sérgio!
-Like 'World Of Warcraft', 'Chaos In The Old World', 'Game of Thrones Card Game', 'Star
Wars card Game', 'Call Of Cthulhu Card game'... -And so many, so many, so many... but, please,
Eric, welcome here, thank you. -Olá!
-We want to know something about you new projects, ok? Please, tell me, what is 'Kaos Ball'?
-'Kaos Ball' is awesome. (laughs)
-You want more. -I'm sure it is.
-A little bit more. -'Kaos Ball' is a 'bloody fantasy sports game',
with ogres, and vampires, and amazons, and... it's a brand new sport, may have to be part
rugby, part 'Unreal Tournament', part gladiatory combat, where you grab the ball and try to
score points, and stay alive as long as you can, over four periods.
-OK. It resembled me like 'Blood Bowl'', but it's not like 'Blood Bowl'...
-Uh, it's only in the sense that is a 'fantasy sports game'. In all other ways it is a completely
different game. It is more of a board game than it is a miniature game, four players
can play at the same time, and it's much shorter, too. It's also... it's less based on micro-managing
your figures, it's more based on being a little bit farther out, right? You are the coach
and you're always... you are strategically maneuvering your team, so all of your teams...
all teams have one ability that all of the characters share and that ability you get
to keep upgrading, so you're not keeping track of the tiny little guys, because they die,
they just... see? Look at that! -They're all the same, have the same skills.
-They've the same skills, exactly, but your team upgrades over time, so every time you
get some it for your team, they all get it, until they're dead.
-Ok, but you don't have dice, ok? You play with cards.
-With cards, yep. -Tell me about the mechanics of the game,
so, a little bit. -Sure! So, the game is over a... played over
four periods. Each period there is a really nice board, that we would show if we had it.
-Ok, we can show, just give it here. -So... look at that, it's just a score sheet.
-It's huge! It's huge, man! -Big board, look at that. So, that's what
we call the crossfield, so, each round, each period, you guys are gonna set up your guys.
-Ok. -You might own this here. Right? You have
bruisers and you have runners. Bruisers are there to attack and tackle your opponents,
runners are there to try to grab the ball and score with it. Every round you're gonna
be activating a number of... uh... one guy each turn. You can either move to try to grab
the ball and hold it, to try to steal the ball from somebody else, to try to tackle
somebody or attack them. And you use the same mechanic for everything that you do. Everything
is automatic until you need to have a contest with your opponent. Everybody has hand cards,
you draw from a common deck in the middle of the table. The cards... there are energy
cards that give you bonuses to a contest, there are tactics cards that can give you
really cool things, that you get to do once and then, instead of activating a figure.
And of course there are cheating cards, that break up very specific rules of the sport
and are very powerful... -The funnier part of the game, ok?
-Of course, and you need to be able to cheat. The thing is that you have to save money to
bribe the referee afterward, otherwise you're going to get fowls for it, and whoever gets
the more fowls at the end of the game lose a lotta points. So, you can cheat as much
as you want, just have the money to pay for it. Whenever you want to have a contest with
somebody, I will play a card and you'll play a card at the same time, will add it to our
team stats. Look at that, 'handling', 'tackling', 'fighting', depending on what you're doing,
so say I'm trying to attack you, look at this... I'm trying to attack the amazon 'cause she's
a b... (laughs)
-...bad person. Right? You play a 1, add it to your team's fighting score of 2, I will
play a 2, so you actually beat me, you would do a damage to me equal to the difference
between the two scores. -Take that, man, take that!
-The ties are... -And ties are broken by a die, there's a six
sided die that the aggressor just have to roll, so say we both tied, I would roll and
add that to my score, I beat you by two, you take three damage. And if you take as much
damage as you have health, you're dead. Otherwise, you just take these little skull tokens, you
put'em on there and you're gonna keep damage. -How is score in this game?
-You score by grabbing the ball in the center. -The ball is this...
-There's actually a miniature for it, but we'll use that, 'cause it's pretty co... it's
just awesome. -It's awesome.
-If you have the ball on top of one of these scoring mounts in the middle, every round
you're gonna score points, based on whatever period it is, so if it's period one, you score
one point, and if it gets to my turn again, I score another point. So, you'll have to
stop me. -We have to control the area, the scoring
area, and the other guy has to move you out. -Right, has to move you out, kill you, steal
it, etc., etc., or there's also one major scoring mount on the opposite site of each
team starting extremage, you get five points for that, always, also...
-Very difficult to get there. -Exactly, and once anybody's played nine cards,
the round... period is over. They sound a whistle, that is over, and then, everybody
whose runners are standing on any of the scoring zones, even if they don't have the ball, score.
And the also score point is for killing each other, so if you kill my guy, you take this
a trophy. At half time, end of period two and at the end of period four, whoever has
the most kills is gonna score a whole bunch of points, etc., and whoever has the most
fowls from cheating is going to lose a whole bunch of points.
-Ok, very interesting, and when is this game gonna be released? You have a date already?
-Yeah, we just've had a huge Kickstarter for it at 'Cool Mini or Not', it finished in the
end of july, I think, and we're going to be shipping in february.
-Good! -So, the core set and eighteen teams which
we unlocked for Kickstarter. -Ok, very good begin.
-Let's talk about the other projects. -Right?
-We got a few... -What you're doin' here in Brazil?
-Well, what I'm doin' here in Brazil is top secret. I'm working on two brand new games
with my producer, who's off camera. Two big epic boardgames that are going to be like
this in size. -Nice!
-They won't be ready for a long time, though, these things take pretty much...
-We know, we know. -Ok, no problem. But, about the product you
can talk to us. I know it's 'Generation Hex' its name...
-Yeah, 'Generation Hex' is based off of the comic called 'Finding Gosamyr', by a studio
called 'Third World Studios', it's cute as a button little comic, 'bout a little boy
who finds out... who's really good at math and finds out he can do magic with it. So
the game is about, you are playing wizards in a...
-You can show something about the game... -I will try.
-I know it's in prototype. -This is a... um protótipo. Very well. You
have this little board. Everybody's going to have their own little boards, they're action
boards. What we're trying to do is to try to complete assignments, which are going to
be cards in the middle, there are gonna be worth points for you. You have to gather will
power or crystals in order to cast spells or complete items. And the cool thing about
the game is that there are tiles that come up in the middle that you use to complete
your board, and these are the actions that you'll get to take. And as you chain them
together, you see they have these little connectors on them, when you take an action, you get
that action plus anything that is chained next to. So you build up a little engine of
actions in order to generate lots of will in power, and then you get these cards that
give you prestige and they also combo at each other.
-Very nice. -So it's a like thirty minute game, plays
up to four players. -Good, good!
-And it gets uh... we really like it! -I'm very interested in playing. We try a
little? -Absolutely!
