Depo is an arts&culture center in an old tobacco storage in Tophane, Istanbul.
The beginning of the Depo project in the tobacco storage dates back to 2009.
In all the exhibitions up until now, we have been running many activities
that emphasize both the socio-political aspects of art and the region: Exhibitions, talks, presentations...
Turkey in general develops its relationships with the countries in the neighborhood through the West.
In order to enable this relationship to be more direct, Depo was founded to create a platform for the artists, NGOs and curators.
We hold approximately 6 exhibitions in a year. There are specific themes.
Social and political issues are in the forefront; these include human rights...
Urban transformation, minority rights, and the role of the art in dealing with traumas.
We have hold many group exhibitions, and also solo exhibitions.
We run discussion programs besides the exhibitions.
Açık Masa talks take place at Depo.
Açık Masa is a monthly program.
Here, we try to bring the artists with social researchers.
Every two weeks we provide documentary screenings.
We do this together with the Documentarist Collective.
Again, documentaries from the region...
In addition to that, we present the chosen examples of documentaries that are done in Turkey in recent years.
The thing that makes Depo different is the need for an alternative space
in the art environment of Istanbul that is becoming more and more institutionalized and commercialized each day.
